Matthias Liffers from Murdoch University opened the technology showcase session with a brief introduction to cloud computing, the latest trends in internet computing and hardware trends. A hands on session followed where those librarians with access to new devices shared their work experiences with the lunch time participants.
Laurie Shervington from Minter Ellison presented a lunchtime session in August to 20 or so participants on the complex topic of Corporation Law. Laurie outlined the governance issues involved in each of the main Acts which support the overall corporation legislative scheme.
As you have probably already have been advised, the ALLA website now has a members only section.
Because there hasn't been that much change on the WA section of site, we thought that we would take advantage of the new facilities and expand what we supplied via the website. What we'd like to know is what you'd like to see on the ALLA (WA) section of the website.
One possibility we've been kicking around is putting up a list of members with contact details in the password protected part of the site. We thought that as the only contact details list people generally had was the one in the front of the Union List (which by now is rather out of date), it might be helpful to have a new one. We thought it should be opt-in, so, if you'd like us to provide your details in the password protected members only section, please email Kelly.underwood --at-- minterellison.com.
Please also send in your ideas for the site; what would you like to see?
Kirsty McPhee and Deb Harvey have sorted most of the data conversion problems with the Union list and HAL requirements. The conversion of the files is now underway and Kirsty will be in touch again with all those members involved in the project.
Before HAL takes full effect can everyone please note the following changes to the Union List from Jackson McDonald:
APLA Journal (Asia-Pacific Lawyers Association) – delete JM holdings and the title from the list
Australian Conveyancer and Solicitors’ Journal – delete JM holdings
Australian Indigenous Law Reporter – delete JM holdings
Commercial Law Association Bulletin – delete JM holdings
Environmental Law Update – delete JM holdings; change to correct publisher – Blake Dawson Waldron solicitors
Franchising Law and Policy Review – delete JM holdings
Gazette of Law and Journalism – delete JM holdings
At an extraordinary meeting of the of the Australian Law Librarians’ Association (Western Australian Division) Inc members voted to amend the Rules of the association as follows:
Rule 17.1 Quorum and Proceeding at General Meeting
Change “attendance by not less than one half of current members present in person, or by proxy” to ‘‘attendance of no less than 15 current members present in person, or by proxy”.
Following the extraordinary meeting of ALLA (WA) the position of vice president of the committee was offered to Kirsty McPhee from Tottle Partners. Kirsty has been an active member of the committee and other members are delighted she has accepted this role.
New members were also welcomed. Mawghan Elverd from Jackson McDonald and Lisa Nichols from Clayton Utz are both library technicians eager to participate in the Association.
At Freehills, Cindy Duong is currently on maternity leave. Jennifer Moore has been appointed to the role of reference librarian. Sau Chee Chiew and Helen Schaper retired after a combined 40 years with the firm and Lori Pryor has been appointed to the position of Library Technician.
Marisa Bendeich has been elected 2010/2011 National Vice President, Australian Law Librarians’ and will assume office at the end of the 2010 ALLA AGM to be held on 1 October 2010.
Marisa has been a very active and progressive member of the NSW Division in the role as President as well as having served on the National Executive Committee (NEC) in the capacity as the NSW President over the past 12 months.
Elections were recently held in NSW with Cindy Martin from Piper Alderman elected as the NSW President.
Congratulations to Mawghan Elverd who received the $1500 ALLA (WA) National Conference Bursary to attend the same conference. Mawghan works as a library technician at Jackson McDonald and consistently shows enthusiasm in attending Association functions. She impressed the committee with her dedication to the profession and her enthusiasm for law librarianship.
We look forward to hearing from both scholarship winners at the Brown bag in October
The ALLA NZLLA Joint Conference in Melbourne was a great success; the papers covering a range of themes including the impact of social networking on the practice of law and law librarianship, the issue of free online access to law, the future of law reporting, mobile delivery of legal content and the latest developments in online legal research training. If you wish to learn more, or share your experience of the conference, come along to our Brown Bag Lunch on October 22. Mawghan Elverd, our 2010 Bursary Recipient, will be providing a report on the conference.
ALLA is conducting a National Membership Survey to collect data that will enable law librarians and information professionals to compare their job and pay with colleagues in other law libraries in the academic, private and public sectors. I encourage you to complete the survey.
