ALLA Journal goes to Napal

The ALLA journal has now made it into high altitude accompanying me on a trip to Nepal. We started with a few days sightseeing in Kathmandu. I was amazed to see a sign saying "central law library" whilst on a taxi ride. Note the reconstruction work to the old royal palace here, due to earthquake damage.
My family and I then set off for a trek outside the city of Pokhara. We caught a glimpse of the famous mountain Machhapuchare, or Fishtail, which has never been climbed to the top, as well as Annapurna South.

I was very glad to have the journal with me and read it cover to cover! Though visibility worsened so we couldn't see mountains after the above we still enjoyed experiencing the Nepalese countryside and villages.

Escape together! ALIA & RIMPA New Grads and Curtin LIS Alumni networking event

The ALIA & RIMPA New Grads and Curtin LIS Alumni are hosting a networking event in June! It’s taken us a few months to organise our first event of 2016; we’ve been working to make our gatherings as exciting and worthwhile as ever.

The June event will be held at Mystic Clue, one of Perth’s real-life room escape puzzle adventures. We will be put inside a themed room, in groups of up to eight people, to follow a story, read clues and solve puzzles in order to get out of the room.

The event will be a great way for new library and records people to get to know each other, because team work will be vital for success!

Each room escape game can take up to 90 minutes from 5pm. If any team gets really confused the owners will give them extra clues, it’s meant to be fun not frustrating! Make sure you eat before you come as no food or drink is allowed in the rooms.

It is very important that everyone arrives on time, as we will enter the rooms at 5pm and once we are in no one else can join in. We don’t want anyone to get left out!

Judgments Support Officer Position - Supreme Court Library Queensland

The Supreme Court Library Queensland is currently recruiting for the position of Judgments Support Officer (CCAD):


Judgments Support Officer

This position works within a small team to provide a range of judgments and sentencing information services, including the Library's CaseLaw services, the Queensland Sentencing Information Service (QSIS) and the Criminal Codes Appellate Decisions (CCAD) database.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain, update and validate databases of sentencing statistics to ensure currency and reliability
  • Undertake the production and processing of content for the QSIS, CCAD and CaseLaw  services, and provide administrative support, to ensure efficient and timely service delivery
  • Assist with the analysis and validation of data in QSIS and CCAD to ensure the integrity and accuracy of those services
  • Monitor developments in case law and legislation relevant to QSIS, CCAD and other judgments services and compile summaries of case law as required
  • Support the Judgments Services Manager in liaising with key information suppliers and other stakeholders, and with any project consultants working on QSIS or other judgments services projects
  • Respond to customer enquiries and provide ongoing customer support in relation to judgments and sentencing services, both in person and via telephone and email
  • Develop and maintain user guides, procedures manuals and training resources for QSIS, CCAD and other judgment services as required
  • Deliver training to users of QSIS, CCAD and other judgments services
  • Assist the Judgments Services Manager with the measurement of judgments services activities and compilation of data for reporting purposes
  • Assist the Judgments Services Manager in promoting QSIS, CCAD and other judgments services to prospective customers and with implementing other marketing initiatives relevant to judgments services
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, including identifying potential efficiencies and enhancements in the production of judgments and sentencing services

Position focus
The Associate Librarian for Administration reports directly to the Law Librarian and together with other members of Executive Committee (the Associate Librarian for Collections & Access, Associate Librarian for Technical Services, and Associate Librarian for Reference & Instructional Services) strategically leads the Law Library as a vital center for research and teaching within the Law School, the University, and for an international community of scholars. The management team collaboratively develops and implements Law Library policies, procedures, structure, and strategies for delivering services and resources to the YLS community and beyond. This position requires the exercise of professional judgment, teamwork, cultural competence, and a clear understanding of the Law Library’s vision, mission, and role.  

The Associate Law Librarian for Administration oversees and supervises the operations of the Law Library's administrative office, which includes two support staff. Manages administrative services in consultation with the Law Librarian and in her absence. Plays a leading role in budget, space, and emergency planning for the Law Library. Monitors the administrative budget and makes spending decisions. Supports and advises supervisors on issues relating to the Law Library's human resources including goal setting, performance review, promotion, merit, professional development, discipline, and union relations. Chairs search committees. Coordinates Law Library committees and participates in many committees ex officio. Assists with planning and monitoring Law Library programs and services, including evaluation and articulation of quality library services through data collection, analysis, assessment, and reporting. Leads the compilation of data for the ABA, ARL, USN&WR, and ALLStAR Benchmarking reports, and possibly others.

Maintains an understanding of trends and developments in legal publishing and information technology and contributes this expertise to strategic planning for the future growth and development of the Law Library. Supports the Law Library's relations with the Law School, the University and University Libraries, library consortia, and professional organizations. Actively participates in the life of the law school and the university, and is professionally active. May also have teaching, service, scholarship, and other administrative responsibilities.

ALLA (WA Division) – Guidelines for Selection of Candidates for the ALLA (WA
Division) Conference Bursary

Applications should include the following details:
  •  Current CV including name and address, position details, experience, qualifications, and the contact details of two referees.
  •  Any contributions made by the applicant to law librarianship.
  •  Any ALLA(WA) committee positions held by applicant or involvement with the group (non-committee members can still apply).
  •  Any special projects undertaken and relevant to law librarianship.
  •  Any awards or professional recognition.
  •  Any published documentation.
The following selection criteria must be addressed:

Essential
  •  Current membership of the ALLA.
  •  Participation in and understanding of ALLA activities at a state level.
  •  Commitment to professional development, with an emphasis on law librarianship demonstrated by attendance at ALLA functions and events.
  •  Ability to act as an ambassador for the ALLA(WA) group at conferences and seminars.
  •  Ability and willingness to produce a verbal and written presentation as feedback to the group about the conference / seminar attended.
  •  Has not received this Bursary in the last 5 years.
Desirable
  •  Varied experience in librarianship, particularly in the law area.

Rules
Selection Panel
  •  The panel shall comprise of three members of the state committee.
  •  Any committee member who applies for the Bursary, or is a referee for an applicant, shall withdraw from the panel.
  •  The President will coordinate the selection process.
  •  Late and incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  •  The decision of the panel will be final.
  •  Applications will be treated confidentially.
  •  The President will inform the applicants of the winner.
  •  Details of the successful applicant will be published via email and social media, mirroring the promotion process.
Promotion
  •  Call for applications for the Bursary will be advertised via email to all WA Members, and on the ALLA(WA) blog and Twitter account. The Bursary will also be advertised more widely on the ALLA(WA) (previously ALLGWA) mailing list but for members only to apply.
Condition on the successful applicant
  •  Attendance at the CCH booth at some point throughout the conference for a photo that may be used for social media purposes.
  •  A written report and verbal presentation to the group will be required within 4 months of attending the conference / seminar. Failure to do so will result in repayment of the full bursary.
  •  The written report may be published, in whole or in part, on the ALLA (WA) Blog, and/or the Australian Law Librarian Journal.

Information Professionals Photo Event



Attention Information Professionals in Western Australia!

You are invited to participate in the 2016 historic group photograph of ‘Information Professionals in WA’ - the first event of its kind in Western Australia.



The concept:

It is hoped that the Information Professionals in WA event will bring together information professionals from all industries and sectors, including librarians, library technicians and officers and records professionals, etc.  The event aims to:

  • Provide an unique photo opportunity to capture the library and information industry in WA collectively, and also provide an option to capture each association and group individually.
  • Facilitate a networking opportunity and encourage information groups and associations to work collaboratively in the future.
  • Promote the differences and commonalities between specific groups and associations.
  • Provide the opportunity for the images to be published in industry journals, websites and blogs, to advertise the historical importance of capturing who we are as library and information professionals in Western Australia.
A similar event occurred for women in the legal profession in 1999 and again in October 2015 with resounding success and we believe that with your help Information Professionals in WA will be just as successful.

Service Changes: Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission Library



The Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission Library has recently downsized its collection, and will be re-locating to new premises.

As a result of this move, the Industrial Relations Commission Library will no longer to be able to allow public access to the Library collection.   However, they will still take email and phone enquiries. 

This change will take effect from Monday 16 May 2016.
