Research and Training Librarian Positions - Supreme Court Library Queenland

The Supreme Court Library Queensland (SCLQ) is Queensland’s principal legal information provider, delivering innovative information services to members of the judiciary, legal profession and community. Its extensive resources span local, national and international materials, accessible online via the Library catalogue, as well as a comprehensive collection of print research materials, totalling more than 150,000 items.

The Role


The Research and Training Librarian works as part of a small Information Services team. This position helps to provide a high quality information service to library customers, including research assistance, general reference services and customised training provision. The Research and Training Librarian will be expected to:

  • Provide librarianship insight and expertise that supports the Information Services team to deliver high quality customer service
  • Provide high quality information services for members of the judiciary, legal profession and other Library customers, both in person and remotely
  • Actively liaise with the Library’s customer base to understand their needs and provide a responsive service
  • Develop and maintain a high level of expertise across a range of legal research tools, in print, electronic and online formats
  • Provide professional responses to legal research enquiries, informed by analysing and evaluating the issues involved
  • Develop and provide customised training sessions to members of the judiciary, legal profession and other Library customers
  • Perform general reference and lending functions, such as processing of user registrations, payments and loans (both individual and inter-library)
  • Develop and participate in activities that promote greater understanding and increased use of Library services
  • Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement, including identifying potential efficiencies and enhancements in the delivery of information services
  • Assist the Information Services Librarian with measurement of information services activities and compilation of data for reporting purposes

The successful candidates will possess the following skills and experience:

  • Relevant degree and/or postgraduate qualification which qualifies for professional membership of Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA)
  • Demonstrated ability to work productively as part of a customer-centric team delivering timely and high quality information services and promoting the library and its services
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and apply research methodology to meet the information needs of library customers
  • Demonstrated ability to clearly impart information and deliver training, in both individual and group settings
  • Demonstrated ability to take the initiative with the creation and delivery of training and assistance to library customers


Law library experience, understanding of the importance of data to decision making in relation to library services and ability to analyse and interpret data to inform service design and development and commitment to the principles of workplace diversity, workplace health and safety and participative work practices are advantageous.


Salary and conditions: $73,126 to $79,862 annual salary (plus leave loading and superannuation)

ALLA members would have received an email from Emma Joneshart, President of ALLA Ltd regarding a call for nominations for members to join the ALLA Ltd Board of Directors. Nominations will be voted upon at the ALLA AGM, held on Thursday 23 September during the ALLA Virtual Conference 2021 .
